Interesting to note that the first car's roof is entirely white with a red cross in the center. We can't see if the red cross goes to the ends of the train down its length.
The other cars seem to have a square area or rectangular area of the roof painted white, with the red cross on that square.
I assume the four white rectangles have a red cross in the center, and that the cars are green, since almost all railway carriages were painted green in those days.
It's interesting also that the crosses seem to be St George's Cross, and not the shorter-armed red cross like the Swiss cross.

The response from the HMRS L&Y archive: Quote:
They are ambulance carriages built by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. This is definitely a WW1 era British built hospital train. These were sold off by the British government in the early 20s. Those carriages that were bought by British railway were all rebuilt to normal carriages. So I presume that this train was sold, or given, to Poland after WW1 and kept as an ambulance train until WW2
I hope that is passed back to the original source.
